In this post, I am going to cover what are Exception based rules and how can you create one.
What are Exception based rules and What is the Use Case?
Lets consider a scenario:
You are running two store. Once for US audience and one for Global Audience. Now here is what you want to achieve.
- Ensure that all the global visitors coming to your US store are redirected to the Global store.
- Ensure that US visitors are not redirected.
The above can be easily achieved using the GeoIP country Redirect App. Here we will make use of the Fallback setting in the app to create an exception based rule.
The Biggest benefit of using the Fallback Setting is that you do not need to manually enter all the countries while creating the rule.
Here is a step by step instruction to achieve the same.
Let’s say, you are running two stores with GeoIP Country Redirect app installed on both of them.
For US visitors– https://sg-localapp.myshopify.com/
For International visitors – https://all-round-store.myshopify.com
Steps to set up the app on the US store
To redirect Global audience from the US store, we will use fallback setting.
Step 1 – Simply go to settings -> Fallback Settings.
Step 2 – Mention the fallback URL as https://all-round-store.myshopify.com.
Step 3 – Check the box “enable fallback settings” and save it.
This will ensure the Global visitors will be redirected to the International site (https://all-round-store.myshopify.com).

Step 4 – Now, to make sure US visitors are not redirected to the international site, we need to create a redirect rule in the app.
Step 5 – To create a redirect rule, simply click on the “Create Rule” tab and fill the required fields as per the screenshot below and click on “save”.

Steps to set up the app on the International store.
The International store will serve the Global audience except for the country “US”.
Under the International store, we need to set up the app so that the US visitors are redirected to the US store https://sg-localapp.myshopify.com if they visit the International site https://all-round-store.myshopify.com .
It can be achieved by creating a single redirect rule and no “fallback setting” required.
Simply click on the “Create Rule” tab and fill the required fields as per the screenshot below and click on “save”.
